In an interview published on 19 October 2026 by Liderzy Innowacyjności, Prof. Witold Łojkowski of the Institute of High Pressure Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IHPP PAS) discusses the Institute’s patented technology for producing nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite with precisely controlled particle size. The interview covers promising preclinical findings from animal studies, selected veterinary applications, and the challenges of further research and commercialization.
The patented method, based on microwave synthesis under high pressure, yields nanoparticles whose size is controlled with nanometer precision, allowing the biomaterial's properties to be tailored to the patient's needs. In studies carried out with foregin partners, scaffolds coated with nanohydroxyapatite markedly improved bone regeneration in animals. In cooperation with veterinarians, the material is already being used to treat severe bone injuries in animals, with very good outcomes.
Thanks to production infrastructure expanded under the CEPT 2 project, a full quality management system, the material is fabricated according to ISO 13485 for medical devices and is ready for clinical trials. The Institute is now seeking industrial partners and investors to jointly bring the technology to the medical market, as well as a distributor for veterinary applications.
