Project description

The project combines efforts of the Polish and Ukrainian research groups in the field of THz physics with the focus on device applications. The solid-state THz physics is dealing with ultra-fast electronic, phononic and photonic processes, which can be efficient in specially selected materials and artificial hybrid structures. The project will explore new two-dimensional materials, their heterojunctions, hybrid nanosized systems and new effects toward plasma-wave electronics and devices for amplification, generation and control of THz radiation. Specifically, the main objectives of the Project are the following. I. Study of THz-properties of hybrid plasmonic structures on the base of two-dimensional crystals and exploration of mechanisms of current-driven amplification and generation of THz radiation. II. Exploration of plasmon-polariton instability in nanoscale diodes made of polar materials for generation of 10-THz range radiation. III. Study of the amplitude and phase spectra of the plasmonic structures in order to find best methods of control of THz radiation beams. Graphene, bi-graphene, phosphorene and other high mobility two-dimensional crystals on different dielectric substrates and respective technologies will be considered as basic materials for fabrication of THz devices. In the Project, we will analyze different mechanisms of current-driven detection, amplification and generation of THz radiation in grating-gated plasmonic crystal structures with strong coupling with THz radiation. Cherenkov-like effects, two-stream instability as well as high-field phenomena producing THz frequency negative conductivity will be analyzed in detail. To justify methods of control of THz radiation beams, we are planning to perform analysis of amplitude and phase transmission and reflection spectra of hybrid plasmonic structures consisting of metal grating, two-dimensional crystals and dielectric substrate. On this base we will elaborate electrically-controllable THz phase modulator and elements for phased array THz antenna. The project will answer the basic question, about the possibility of on-chip plasmonics amplifiers and generator of THz radiation, as well as methods of control of the radiation. All of such finding are critically important for potential applications in fast wireless telecommunication, imaging , sensing, and other domains. The important objectives of this project is to continue and enhance mutual collaboration between the Ukrainian and Polish researchers in the field of THz-plasmonics, to provide theoretical support for experimental and technological works, to exchange new ideas in THz physics and device engineering areas as well as their experimental verifications. As a whole, the cooperative Project will strengthen Ukrainian science, develop new technologies and new materials for the restoration of electronic industry in Ukraine.
