European patent of unitary effect granted to Unipress
Unipress has become the first among all public research organisations in the world that requested the unitary effect of the European patent from EPO (European Patent Office). The patent was granted to Institute of High Pressure Physics for "Device and method for measuring thickness of a dielectric layer on a metal surface". Inventors: prof. Valeri Mikhnev, prof. Wojciech Knap and prof. Tomasz Skotnicki.
Prof. Valeri Mikhnev and prof. Wojciech Knap present the patent certificate.
This new formula of unitary effect of european patent was introduced by EPO in 2023 and it allows applicants to opt for the protection automatically extending to all countries that have already ratified the agreement, at present covering 17 countries. Not only it streamlines the patenting procedure, but also reduces application costs and subsequent renewal fees (if the patent was intented for enforcement in more than four countries). Unitary effect does not interfere with applying for protection elsewhere under the preexisting rules. More about the unitary patent system on the webpage of Polish Patent Office.
